YEAR 11 students have enjoyed evenings of glitz and glamour at their leavers proms.

Whitehaven School's event, which was organised by a group pupils, took place at the Hunday Manor last Thursday.

David Jones, assistant head teacher, said the event was a chance for pupils to celebrate the end of their exams and the end of term in style. He said the students looked “resplendent in their costumes” and their conduct made the staff proud.

He said: “We would like to record our thanks to the students and teachers on the organising committee, for their amazing efforts in raising funds for the prom, for transport and for the year-book, and we would like to extend our thanks to the management and staff at the Hunday Manor for their excellent hospitality.”

He added: “Many of our students face an uncertain future, as do young people throughout western society at this time, but it is clear that there is hope and optimism, and there is certainly the talent.”

“We wish our students a safe and successful passage through the next stage of their lives. We are all richer for having been a part of their lives.”

And 94 students from St Benedict’s School celebrated the end of their exams with a formal prom at Sella Park last week, with party-goers dressed to impress in stunning ballgowns and dapper suits.

It was an event organised for the students – by the students – with everything from the venue and transport to the seating plan and entertainment arranged by the sixth form council, with some staff support.

A highlight of the evening for many was the prize-giving, with fun awards given to the Best Couple, Comedy Double Act and even the Most Likely to be a Millionaire! Speeches then followed from head boy and girl, James Barlow and Olivia Farrell, and head of sixth form, Kevin Green.

“It was an excellent event, and the sixth form council worked extremely hard and deserve enormous credit,” said the school’s student support officer Carla Tomlinson who, with teachers Angela Homer and Kat Burnup, lent the council a hand.

The students are now off their separate ways, with 78 of the 103 sixth formers applying for university, and the rest seeking apprentices and other careers.

Year 11 pupils were also dressed to the nines as they enjoyed their glitzy end-of-year prom at The Castle Inn, Bassenthwaite. Deputy headteacher Ian Williams said: “It was a splendid evening.”
