Glam rock legends on way

TWO of the biggest glam rock bands – Slade and The Sweet – are coming to party at next year’s Whitehaven Festival.

It promises to be a colourful night recreating the era when flamboyant outfits were coupled with outrageous make-up and equally vivid hairstyles.

Bruce Foxton’s From The Jam are also on the bill for the big gig at next year’s festival on Saturday, June 22.

The three bands will be supported by local musicians Radio Silence.

Tickets, priced £35, are now on sale. There is currently an ‘early bird’ offer on for four weeks when tickets are available for £29.

You can expect Slade’s biggest numbers such as Cum On Feel The Noize, My Oh My, Mama Weer All Crazee Now and maybe even Merry Christmas Everybody. And from The Sweet who could forget Teenage Rampage, Ballroom Blitz, Blockbuster, Fox On The Run and Wig Wam Bam.

Gerard Richardson, festival organiser, said he was delighted with the line-up.

“We wanted to put Slade on last year but they were headlining a festival in Germany and disappointed they couldn’t make it. They are looking forward to coming this year and suggested we get The Sweet along.

“As two of the most iconic bands in the last 40 years it’s going to be a real feelgood party night which is exactly what has consistently worked at the festivals.

“Both bands have a huge number of hits and along with From the Jam, who have a massive following, it’s going to be a great night of music.”

The original line-up of Slade with frontman Noddy Holder split in 1992 but original band members Dave Hill and drummer Don Powell are still in the band, joined by John Berry on bass guitar, vocals, violin and Mal McNulty on vocals and guitar.

The Sweet have sold over 55 million records worldwide and enjoyed 34 number one hits.

They are still touring and performing to sell out audiences across the world.

The band is now made up of lead guitarist Andy Scott who joined in 1970 on lead guitar/vocals; Pete Lincoln lead vocals/bass; Tony O Hora guitar/keyboard/vocals and drummer Bruce Bisland.

From The Jam will belt out an energetic set including all The Jam’s biggest songs such as Town Called Malice, That’s Entertainment, The Modern World and In The City.

The band – which includes original members Rick Buckler and Bruce Foxton – have a big following and promise hit after hit from the late seventies and early eighties.

The three bands will play for an hour each and tickets are currently available online only at www.thewhitehavenfestival.co.uk

Copeland Council leader Elaine Woodburn praised the festival team: “It’s difficult I imagine to build on many years of success and sign the variety of artists that the festival needs but the festival committee have yet again succeeded in getting blockbusters, (get it!) that will evoke memories in most people.

“It will be the only time that it will ok to scream Merry Christmas everyone in the middle of June. Out with my glam rock kit and roll on June. Well done to all involved.”
