CLEATOR Moor fundraiser GARY McKEE was the guest of honour at a thrilling Games final on Sunday.
Gary, along with his wife SUSAN, attended the dramatic men’s handball final in London, in which France edged out Sweden by a single point, 22-21, to retain their title.
Gary was invited in recognition of his tireless charity work, helping to raise around £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support over the last 10 years.
Before the game, the McKees attended a champagne reception in the Olympic Park in which Gary received his national Macmillan Volunteer of the Year Award.
“The whole day was absolutely great,” he said Gary. “We enjoyed the reception, chatting with dignitaries and sponsors, and representatives of Macmillan. And the game itself was brilliant. The final had to be moved from the Copper Box to the basketball arena to accommodate all the people.
“Afterwards we had a chance to wander around the Olympic Park and the whole set-up was fantastic... the place was buzzing.”
Gary, who carried the Olympic torch on its way through Whitehaven, has completed a number of challenges at home and abroad for Macmillan, including cycling through Brazil, climbing Kilimanjaro and trekking across New Zealand.
Gary and Susan attended as guests of npower.
