GEORGE Lewthwaite, the last surviving member of five Whitehaven brothers, has died in Yorkshire just a few weeks short of his 92nd birthday.

All the brothers worked in Haig Pit but George never returned to his home town after serving in World War Two.

His other brothers were Henry, George, Tom, Edward and Joseph, who also left West Cumbria to work.

George’s hobby was drawing. He did occasional illustrations for The Whitehaven News focussing on cartoons of local places and people.

His nephew, Tom Lewthwaite, who runs a Whitehaven business at Flatt Walks, recalls: “When war broke out I was told by my own dad (Tom snr) that George couldn’t get out of the pit quickly enough.”

The brothers were brought up at 13 Preston Street.

In the Second World War George served both in the Artillery and in the Military Police. He returned to settle in the Hull area working for an aircraft company.

George also had two sisters, Margaret and Mary.

His funeral took place yesterday in Hull.
