Forensic skills to the fore

IT was a case of CSI: Egremont last week as students used their investigative skills to solve a “murder”.

Psychology students at West Lakes Academy had to follow clues, interrogate suspects and analyse evidence to catch the killer in a special CSI day.

One of four visiting lecturers – played by actors from Lancaster University – was poisoned in their car outside the school building, and it was left to the Year 10 and 12 pupils to solve the case.

“It was a brilliant day, and we’ve had very positive feedback from the pupils,” said psychology teacher Mark Crook.

“They thoroughly enjoyed the experience of following the clues, formulating their ideas and compiling a profile of the killer.

“The actors were equally impressive, as they were the only ones who knew who the ‘killer’ was and had to improvise with the questions and situations presented to them by the pupils.”

Following the crime scene investigations and suspect interrogations, it was off to the labs for analysis of footprints, fingerprints and fibres to allow one of the groups to correctly identify Jane as the ‘killer’.

“It’s always the quiet ones!” said Mr Crook.
