A FISHERMAN was found dead on the beach at Parton on Sunday night.
Ambulance and coastguard were called to the scene at 10pm but were unable to save him.
He was named as Raymond Bull, 71, of Derwentwater Road, Whitehaven.
He had been taking part in a fishing competition and concerns had been raised when he failed to return to a rendezvous point.
Police say family members found Mr Bull in the sea and were able to pull him ashore before officers and the coastguard arrived at the scene.
He was pronounced dead at the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven.
It is suspected he suffered a heart attack and fell into the water.
The coroner has been informed.
