Eleanor, 23, a former pupil of Hensingham Juniors and Whitehaven School, achieved a first class degree in biology and received Star Trek star Sir Patrick’s prize for academic excellence. To gain the prize she had to average 80 per cent throughout her second and third years.

Eleanor, daughter of Ian and Wendy Hinde of Whitehaven, said she was “really proud” to have won the Chancellor’s Prize and is now hoping her academic success will propel her into a PhD project slightly closer to home.

“I will be starting a PhD at Lancaster University in October. My project is to develop an assay for UVA induced skin damage.”
