A GREEN-THINKING approach to environmental issues has won Whitehaven School an award for its efforts.

The school has been presented with the Eco-Schools silver and bronze awards for its work with pupils, staff and the surrounding community.

A host of activities has taken place at the school, including the introduction of battery recycling. Kitchen caddies and compost bins have also been brought in to the school so that organic waste from the kitchens is composted.

The awards were given through an international award programme, managed by Keep Britain Tidy.

Head teacher Lynette Norris said: “I am thrilled that the hard work of this very committed team has paid off. I feel very proud that the school has been recognised with both the bronze and silver Eco-Schools awards.

“A big thanks goes to the eco-group, staff, parents and governors; but an especially big thank you must go to the students themselves. Brilliant!”

Students, staff, parents, governors and members of the local authority have all helped to fulfil the criteria for the award which covered 10 separate areas on the green agenda.

A group of students has been involved in an eco-group, which has looked at various way to address environmental issues.

Year 11 student Adam Clayton has been leading the group for several years.

He said: “I couldn’t have done it without the other students and staff who have helped towards achieving these two fantastic awards.”

Other students who have been active members of the school’s eco-group working with Adam over the past year are Ben Cowan, Jasmine Storey, Neve Tweedie and Kyra Williams.
