WHAT will our world be like in the year 2050? That’s the question that St Benedict’s School pupils have been trying to answer during a special environmental activity day.

Year 8 pupils had a day off-timetable during which they showed creativity and innovation to come up with the best concept of how we’ll need to adapt to the changing climate.

The event was coordinated by IMechE West Cumbria, and 10 STEM ambassadors from Sellafield Ltd and 10 apprentices from GEN II provided classroom mentoring to the teams taking part.

Each set of classroom winners competed for the overall winner’s prize by presenting their concepts to the whole school year and a panel of judges.

The winning team received the 2050 School Trophy and free passes to Camelot Theme Park, courtesy of the Story Group.

Also at St Benedict’s, 40 Year 6 pupils from feeder schools St Patrick’s, St Bridget’s, St Begh’s and Jericho worked in teams of two to demonstrate their imagination, creativity and ingenuity by designing and making a model buggy with K’Nex construction kits.

The pupils were set a challenge to build a model that had to carry a weighted load down a ramp and as far as possible.

The models were judged by Stephen Brown and Scott Telford of React Engineering, and the winning team was from St Patrick’s.
