Dinner lady Katie served them well

IT WAS an emotional farewell for the retiring dinner lady who had been part of a Whitehaven school for 22 years.

I’M GOING TO MISS YOU ALL: Moor Row dinner Lady Katie Greenwood, centre says her tearful goodbyes to her lunchtime colleagues Christine Cartwright, left and Linda Kenmare and the whole school

Katie Greenwood, of Bigrigg, has been looking after Moor Row children at lunchtimes since 1992.

Last Friday was Katie’s final shift and she was surprised with a bouquet of flowers and shopping vouchers.

The midday supervisor said: “I can’t believe it, I didn’t expect a fuss at all.”

Katie, 64, has watched hundreds of children grow up and now some of them even have youngsters at the school.

“I’m always remembered by the children, I had a no-nonsense approach with them but I don’t think it was a bad thing, it just made boundaries clearer and lunchtimes easier.”

The mother-of two, moved to West Cumbria from Yorkshire in 1979, did a stint in the advertising department at the Whitehaven News before leaving to raise her two girls, now aged 34 and 30.

As a parent she played an active role in Moor Row School life and joined the team in the early 90s.

Paula Skelly, headteacher, said: “Katie was here when I started 16 years ago and is a much loved face around school who will be truly missed.”

Linda Kenmare, another playground supervisor has worked every lunch time with Katie for the past 15 years, said: “She is great company and a very dear friend. It is sad she is leaving but we will still make the time to see each other.”

Katie is retiring to spend more time with her husband and family.

“I may be retiring but I don’t plan on getting old!” Katie joked.
