Digging deep to help allotments

THE WHITEHAVEN News Charitable Trust has handed over £250 to Howgill Family Centre.
The cash will be used to buy garden equipment and cold frames to use at the centre’s community allotment project.
Encouraging families to learn about healthy eating, growing vegetables, the environment, beneficial insects and wildlife is the aim of Howgill’s Family Support team. The project also gives families an outdoor space to use within Whitehaven town.
A spokesperson for Howgill said: “Some of our families have very little green space and were delighted to be offered the chance to garden and grow vegetables. We have had huge, enthusiastic feedback from local people wanting to be involved.
“The idea has worked for the ‘Lads and Dads’ in the past but we want to extend the project to involve more of the community, especially parents and children working and learning together.’’
