THE man who heads up human resources at Sellafield will be one of the leading lights in planning careers on a nationwide scale.
The setting up of a National Council for Careers was announced in parliament last week by skills minister John Hayes.
David McNerney is one of 10 members who between them represent public, private and third sectors drawing on extensive experience and expertise in HR, finance and communications.
As human resources director for Sellafield Ltd, Mr McNerney has overall responsibility for around 10,000 employees.
The NCC will be a driving force for excellence in careers guidance providing independent, expert advice to government.
Its aim is to help create a new beginning in careers guidance by improving professionalism, forging links with business and ensuring that advice reflects the complexity of the labour market.
For the government, Mr Hayes said: “I am delighted that a team of experienced and dedicated professionals have agreed to work on this extremely important council which will be at the forefront of transforming careers guidance.”
Mr McNerney explained: “We’ll be looking at the operation and development of the National Careers Service in the country which provides information and advice for more than a million people every year. I’m honoured to be able to play a part in the work.”
Chair of the NCC, Dr Deirdre Hughes OBE, said: “For young people and adults having access to high quality and improved careers support services has become more important than ever.”
