Organisers of Whitehaven’s Freedom Parade have secured a display from the imposing plane, which forms part of the Battle of Britain Display Team.

Further air displays are still to be confirmed for the event on Tuesday, May 6, that will see military veterans march through the streets of Whitehaven.

And there is still time for veterans to sign up for the parade – which will start and end on the town’s harbour – and forms part of the Whitehaven World War One Week in the run-up to the centenary of the outbreak of the war.

The parade will run from the hub along Duke Street, Scotch Street, Lowther Street, King Street and back to the hub for an air display and speeches.

It starts at 11.30am and will last about an hour.

As well as appealing for veterans who wish to march to get in touch, event organiser The Whitehaven Festival Company is also inviting schools to make contact to arrange for their pupils to support the marchers. Some free transport to town is available.

A World War One exhibition is also being held in Whitehaven (May 5 to 10) for which free visits are available to book (although not on the parade day).

Veterans and schools who wish to get involved in the parade/exhibition are asked to contact Richardson’s of Whitehaven, on Lowther Street, on 01946 65334 or louise@richardsonsoffice.net. Veterans must have access to an email address to which they will be sent the parade route.
