Criffel fire lights up night sky
Published at 11:09, Thursday, 29 March 2012
THIS dramatic scene was captured on camera by a Whitehaven News reader on Monday night.
With Whitehaven’s North Pier lighthouse in the foreground, the picture was taken by local photographer Rob Lockhart, of Moresby Parks.
It features a major grass fire which broke out on Monday afternoon at Criffel, on the Scottish side of the Solway Firth.
The dramatic flames created spectacular views from Copeland. At the height of the blaze, five fire engines were at the scene with more than 30 firefighters involved. There have been no reports of any casualties.
It is thought that the fire started after controlled burning got out of control.
