STUDENTS who completed the Youth Sport Trust Millennium Volunteers programme were honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Olympic hockey star Calum Giles, Paralympic champion Chris Holmes and World junior high jump finalist Stanley Osuide presented the awards to pupils from Wye Valley School, New Road, Bourne End.

Millennium Volunteers is the governments flagship programme, funded by the Department for Education and Employment, established to encourage and support youngsters aged 16-19 in full-time education to become volunteers.

Amy Hodgson, spokesman for the Youth Sport Trust, said: "The students do between 100 and 200 hours of sports based voluntary work, which includes planning and staging festivals of sport or dance for their local primary schools."
