THE Mayor of Copeland led the borough’s tributes on Remembrance Sunday.

Coun Peter Tyson laid the first poppy wreath on the memorial in Castle Park, Whitehaven, followed by the Royal British Legion branches, Royal British Legion Women's Section (together), other ex-service organisations, the Armed Forces and Cadets, MP Jamie Reed, Paul Walker, the chief executive of Copeland Borough Council, and other public bodies and members of the general public.

There was then a procession to St Nicholas’ Gardens where a wreath was laid at the Normandy Veterans’ memorial, and the procession then continued to the Civic Hall for a Remembrance Sunday service in which prayers were led by the Rev John Bannister, Rector of Whitehaven, and the sermon delivered by Father Grugan, the Mayor’s Chaplain.

In the afternoon, at 2.45pm, the mayor and mayoress attended a Remembrance service at Cleator Moor.

The deputy mayor and mayoress, Geoff Garrity and Mrs Garrity, took part in Millom’s Remembrance Sunday service with the parade forming at the Tin Chapel, Mainsgate Road.

The Whitehaven Parish Eucharist and Act of Remembrance was at St James’ Church at 10am and there was a service at St Nicholas’ Chapel at 3pm.

Gosforth and District Royal British Legion held its annual Remembrance service on Sunday at 3pm at St Peter’s Church, DRIGG. A laying of wreaths took place after the Sunday morning service at St Cuthbert’s Church, SEASCALE.

There was a service of Remembrance with Holy Communion at Kirkland Mission, a parish remembrance service at St Michael’s Church, Lamplugh; and wreaths were laid at the war memorial at St Mary’s Church, Ennerdale, at 2.30pm.

At Egremont, the parade assembled at Ehen Court Road and marched to Egremont war memorial for the Act of Remembrance at 11am, followed by wreath laying and on to St Mary’s RC Church for Remembrance Day service.

At Moor Row, the Act of Remembrance took place at the war memorial at 1pm, followed by wreath laying, while at Frizington, a Service of Remembrance was held at 1pm in the fire station on Main Street, followed by a wreath-laying at the war memorial. Wreaths were also laid at St Michael’s Church, Arlecdon, and St Joseph’s RC Church, Frizington, at their morning services.
