BEFORE sharing with her audience some of the items concerning women’s lives in the county archives, recently retired archivist Susan Dench pointed out that women received very limited education until the late 19th century and feature rarely in historical records. There were even marriage certificates on which merely the man’s name was recorded.

Moresby WI
MEMBERS of Moresby WI celebrated their 63rd birthday with a party at Rosehill Barn. After a brief business meeting, the party began with a fish and chip supper. Members of the committee had provided a scrumptious array of puddings.

West Cumbria U3A – Science Group
ADRIAN Bull travelled from Preston on May 16 and gave a well- presented talk to the Science Group of the West Cumbria U3A. He is employed by Westinghouse, which is one of the companies hoping to build new nuclear reactors in the UK, and he is also an active committee member of SONE (Supporters of Nuclear Energy).

Whitehaven Rambling Club
ON Sunday, May 1, six members of the club began a litter sweep along the cycle track from Phoenix Bridge, Cleator Moor to Moor Row, including the approaches of the tracks from Bowthorn and Cleator.

THIS month we saw Lynn Stott from Preston come to join us and she was “Inspired by the Season”. She is a very keen gardener, but north Preston is very windy and she struggles with her garden.

THE April meeting began with a silent tribute being paid to Eileen Skivington, a former member, and to Cynthia McDermott (Angela’s sister-in-law), who was a regular WI visitor, both having died recently.

ON the south shore of the Solway Firth lies Campfield Marsh nature reserve, an area of peat bogs, farmland, grasslands and salt marsh, the subject of Neil Hutchin’s slide show and lecture as early April brought mild winds and birds up from the south west.

GRAHAM Round travelled to Whitehaven Chase Hotel to give a talk on LEDs – the upcoming light source. He is general sales manager at Marl International Limited based in Ulverston, employing some 120 people. His talk began with an explanation of the minute cubes of esoteric material which can be made to emit different coloured light when plugged into an electricity supply.
