ON Friday, mayor of Copeland Henry Wormstrup and mayoress Lee Hodgson joined the members of The Kells Royal British Legion in the Club Rooms for their annual reunion.

Whitehaven Local History Society
AT THEIR meeting on January 18, the society was presented with a cheque for £1,150 by Jill Hocking, admin assistant, Copeland Community Unit, on behalf of four Neighbourhood Forums.

Cumbria Decorative and Fine Arts Society
Our last lecture in 2009 had been in November and we still had an audience of more than 50 to hear Jane Kelsall talk, with authority and great humour, about a forgotten English sculptor. We all know Eros, the iconic statue in Piccadilly Circus but very few people have heard of its creator, Alfred Gilbert.

THE meeting on January 12 was led by President Mary Gregg. There was no County News this month, but members recalled a great day out with Lamplugh WI.

OUR president Brenda Shaw welcomed our guest speaker Charlotte Widgery to our first meeting of the year. Charlotte who had travelled from Penrith was a breath of fresh air on this very cold winter evening.

THE talk in January was Steps of Valhalla by Stephen Greenwood, describing aspects of Bavaria, especially the architectural eccentric achievements of Ludweg, Crown Prince of Bavaria and his grandson Ludweg II.

AFTER the annual meeting had been concluded, the January meeting of the Cumbria Wine Society which met as usual at Hundith Hill had a members’ night when they sampled the favourite wines from each meeting held during the last year.

Moor Row Jubilee Club
OUR first meeting of the new year was opened with a prayer from Stanley Young. Then chairman John Allonby welcomed us all and wished us a Happy New Year. Quite a few apologies were given because of the bad weather.

ONCE again we have had a couple of busy months over the Christmas period. This began in November with Rosehill Theatre, this year the demonstrator was Janet Hayton from York.

Soroptimist International
RECENTLY four members attended the Federation Conference in Cardiff along with 1,700 delegates from more than 25 countries. Keynote speakers included Chris Moon MBE injured while clearing landmines and journalist Christina Lamb, a close friend of Benazir Bhutto.

THE Christmas Party held on December 1 may have been a bit early in the month but the decorated hall and tables, not to mention a buffet feast, set the mood for the Christmas festivities.
