THE first meeting of the History Group of 2011 was a talk on Lead Mining in the North Pennines by Brian Martland. It could almost have been entitled Rubbish as most of the information from the distant past came from the spoil heaps that had been discarded over the years.

CEJAPGARD02 DESPITE the wintry conditions a fair sized audience assembled in Whitehaven Civic Hall on December 1 to hear Gareth Browning of the Forestry Commission speak about his organisation’s smallest site in England at Eskdale Green, an area better known for its narrow-gauge railway.
