Open Mind West Lakes U3A

THE first meeting of the History Group of 2011 was a talk on Lead Mining in the North Pennines by Brian Martland. It could almost have been entitled Rubbish as most of the information from the distant past came from the spoil heaps that had been discarded over the years.

Cumbria Decorative and Fine Arts Society

THE 17th Century was a time of upheaval, but the deadly rivalry in the title of this month’s Cumbria Decorative and Fine Arts Society lecture did not relate to political strife. The rivalry in question – between the Earl of Arundel, the Duke of Buckingham and Charles I – concerned the intense competition between the nobility to acquire, not only the most desirable paintings; but also the services of the best new artists.
