COUNCIL and community gathered at Kells on Sunday afternoon for the Mayor of Copeland’s annual Civic Sunday.
A procession, led by this year’s mayor, Coun Peter Tyson, and his mayoress (and daughter-in-law) Louise Tyson, congregated at St Peter’s Parish Community Hall on Lakeland Avenue and marched up Rydal Avenue on to High Road bound for St Mary’s RC Church.
Represented in the parade were fellow Copeland councillors and council officers, county councillors, visiting mayors, aldermen of the borough and church representatives.
Whitehaven Brass Band, St John Ambulance, Whitehaven Sea Cadets and members of HCPT Group 75 (one of the Mayor’s chosen charities) also took part.
The service was led by Mayor’s Chaplain, Father Aelred Grugan of St Mary’s Church, and prayers were said by the Rev Allen Banks of St Peter’s Church, Kells.
A prayer of thanksgiving was read by Sea Cadet Mitchell Sloan, and Coun Elaine Woodburn, leader of Copeland Council, gave the bible reading.
