Commonwealth volunteer Graeme is one in 50,000

SELECTED from 50,000 people, the Commonwealth Games has its only West Cumbrian representative.

QUICK TO RESPOND: Graeme Nicholson

By Lucy Grosvenor

Graeme Nicholson, of Moresby Parks, is one of 1,400 medical volunteers who will be assisting at this month’s Glasgow games.

The 28-year-old first responder will be on hand should anyone need medical assistance in the opening ceremony and the Rugby 7s match.

He found out about the role two years ago and went up against thousands of other applicants to be one of the select few who were successful.

He said: “I am excited, I never thought I would make the cut. I feel very lucky to be at the opening ceremony.”

Graeme has been with the Whitehaven First Responders for four years now and is looking forward to the two and a half week event.

He added: “I don’t know anyone else locally who has secured a position to help throughout the games. I think I may just be the only West Cumbrian taking part.”
