Best known for her role in the intensive care unit, Jane Bunker has cared for patients and supported their families for over four decades.

The Whitehaven hospital has been Jane’s only place of work, and she says: “I have seen many changes – lots for the better.

“It can be quite stressful and emotionally demanding but generally enjoyable. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of it.”

Jane, 59, began work as a cadet at the age of 16 where she was involved in administration and healthcare work. She enrolled and trained as a nurse, before going on to work in the gynaecology department for around four years.

She said she moved roles to work in orthopedic surgery for around 18 months.

Jane had a year’s break from her nursing role after the birth of her son Steven.

On returning to work, she worked as bank staff for the ICU and then took on part-time work in the department.

Jane says although she officially retired on May 31, she has “mixed emotions” about it, saying that she felt it was the right time to leave although it still feels as if she’s on holiday!

A series of leaving celebrations have been held for staff to say their goodbyes.

Jane and long-standing work colleagues enjoyed celebrations at Armathwaite Hall and a farewell party with staff was also held at Whitehaven Golf Club on Monday.

This year, Jane also celebrates 40 years of marriage to husband Michael.
