TWO small children locked in a car have been rescued by firefighters.

The youngsters, aged four years and six months, had been accidently locked in the car by their mother at Whinlatter Road, Whitehaven, on Tuesday afternoon.

Crews rescued the children using glass management tools to smash a window and gain entry to the vehicle.

A witness said the children were “calm throughout the scene’’ before being reunited with their family.

The crew, called to the incident at 2.38pm, returned to their station at 4.20pm.

Keith Opie, group manager, at Cumbria Fire Service said the mother, who inadvertently locked the car, did “everything right’’ after realising what had happened.

“She called the emergency services straight away,’’ he said. “We asked if she could contact the garage, who could get into the car without damaging it, but that wasn’t possible in the circumstances.

“Subsequently, we broke the cheapest window with the minimal of distress. It was a controlled situation.’’
