LEGAL restrictions could be introduced on a narrow road on which a wagon recently overturned on a sharp bend.

The HGV came off Red Beck Road on December 20 after the driver’s sat nav took him along the road he had not driven along before.

The driver, who was going to Eskett Quarry, released himself from the vehicle, receiving minor injuries.

Now, as a result of this incident and a number of similar examples over the past 10 years, Cumbria County Council is to look into the possibility of introducing a weight or width restriction on the road that is just north of Cleator Moor that links Wath Brow and Kirkland.

As a direct result of the December incident, signs were installed to advise motorists that the road in unsuitable for HGVs, however some are ignoring this warning.

Members of Cumbria County Council’s local committee for Copeland will therefore be told tomorrow (Friday) that a permanent traffic regulation order should be introduced.

If councillors are minded to agree the recommendation, a general consultation with the public will be launched to gauge local opinion, and a decision will be taken after that. No specific weights or widths have yet been suggested.
