But 150 laid off at heating plant

UP to 150 Sellafield contractors working on the off-site combined heat and power plant were laid off yesterday.
Sellafield Ltd terminated the contract of Worley Parsons Europe Ltd to provide an alternative steam supply to the nuclear site.
Worley Parsons is the main contractor and the laid-off workers include those employed by several sub-contract companies.
Sellafield Ltd said: “With other partners we will assess alternative arrangements to ensure the project is delivered safely and to maximum benefit for the taxpayer. Any employment issues are between the contractor, its subcontractors and their own staff.”
The contract has been to build a new back up boiler system. An angry worker said: “It’s a total shock. We were just told to go home because the project was mothballed, even though it was 85 per cent completed. We are disgusted by what’s happened.”
