Work starts on construction skills centre
Last updated at 11:54, Thursday, 07 June 2012
WORK has begun on a new £7million complex that could form a key plank of regeneration in West Cumbria and support thousands of jobs.
The construction skills centre for Britain’s Energy Coast is being built at Lakes College, Lillyhall.
It will feature state-of-the-art teaching spaces and workshops for up to 600 students and has been funded by the Energy Coast project with backing from Nuclear Management Partners and Lakes College.
The scheme is being project-managed by Cumbria County Council, built by Esh Construction and will be operated by Lakes College. Once open, the centre will train students on specialist construction skills needed to work in the energy sector.
Construction work is expected to take just under a year. The centre is being built with the aim to support a number of major nuclear and energy projects planned for West Cumbria over the coming years.
