BUSINESSES can learn how to harness the power of social media at a conference to be held in West Cumbria.

Cumbrian Newspapers – the parent company of The Whitehaven News – has organised a half-day conference at the Lakes College to showcase the best ways for businesses to use social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

The event will take place from 1pm on May 17 and will be ideal for any business or organisation wondering how they should use social media to raise their profile. If you’ve already taken your first steps in Facebook and Twitter, come along and share your experience with those businesses that have already reaped the rewards of a successful social media strategy.

Sessions include:

An overview of social media with Cumbrian digital consultant, Andrew Armitage

Practical tips on building an audience on social media with Cumbrian Newspapers’ digital strategy manager, Nick Turner

The legal dos and don’ts surrounding social media with Vaughan Jones, of Burnetts Solicitors

A demonstration of creating first-class Facebook pages with internet marketeer Paul Teague

Cumbrian Newspapers is holding the event in association with Britain’s Energy Coast Cluster Group.

The event is also being supported by Cumbrian accountancy firm Armstrong Watson.

After presentations and a question and answer session with the panel at Lakes College, Lillyhall, there will be a chance to network and discuss social media with our “digital champions” – local businesses who have already made a success of social media.

Laptops will be available so you can get practical advice on using Facebook and Twitter.

Digital strategy manager Nick Turner said: “We hope this event will give West Cumbrian businesses an overview of how they can use social media to their advantage and also give them the chance to get some useful advice and tips from local companies who have already made good use of Facebook and Twitter for their business.”
