Students to play vital role in Festival

STUDENTS on event management courses at the University of Cumbria are gaining invaluable work experience from a successful partnership with local company Worldwide Events Limited and Whitehaven Festival.
For the past two years, event management students have had the opportunity to work at the festival on the harbourfront, and this year, six students are taking on a variety of roles in the setting up, delivery and take down of the event.
In addition, first-year student Helen Statham was selected to undertake paid work as an event management assistant, working with show director and CEO of Worldwide Events Ltd, Andrew Lennie, on pre-event planning and development.
Helen said: “It’s a privilege to work on such a successful festival in this Jubilee year, as Whitehaven Festival is one of the largest celebrations over the Jubilee weekend outside London.
“It’s a fantastic professional opportunity for all of the students involved. My pre-event planning role has given me great insight into how an event company works.”
Event management course leader Laura Baxter added: “The university’s partnership with this large local festival of great quality and diversity is going from strength to strength, with more students involved each year, taking on greater roles and responsibilities.”
