Safe workers’ hospice gift

THE excellent safety record of a team from Sellafield has resulted in a sizeable charity donation.
Workers from the Waste and Effluent Disposition Directorate’s (WEDD) Engineering and Project Delivery Unit have celebrated three years (or two million man hours) without a lost-time accident with a £2,000 donation to West Cumbria Hospice at Home.
The operating unit employs 270 people, including designers, project managers, construction and commissioning teams, working in partnership with the supply chain.
In recognition of these achievements, WEDD directorate and Shepley Engineering donated £1,000 each to Hospice to support its palliative and end-of-life care within the local community.
Steve Cowper, construction manager, Sellafield Ltd, said; “Three years without an LTA in the field of construction is incredibly significant, because the opportunities for accidents to occur are magnified within a construction environment.”
Simon Wittridge, head of engineering and project delivery, Sellafield Ltd, added: “This could not have been achieved without the relentless pursuit of nuclear and conventional safety at every level in the Sellafield Ltd and supply chain partner organisations.”
Another safety milestone has also been reached on the Sellafield site with the Separation Area Ventilation project also celebrating more than a million man-hours without a lost time accident.
Cliff Roberts, project manager, Sellafield Ltd, said: “The project team and contractors have carried out this work over the last four years in a very challenging environment.
“I would like to thank each and every one of the project team for their efforts, and I look forward to another year of safe delivery.”
