We can still achieve benefits

CUMBRIA can still achieve the benefits of an Enterprise Zone, without the Government’s help, a leading councillor has claimed.

Tony Markley, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for economic regeneration said, despite ministers snubbing Cumbria’s bid for a zone, which would have covered Lillyhall and Barrow, many of its aspirations can still be met.

He said politicians and business leaders should now switch their focus to creating the same business culture in Cumbria as would be available in Enterprise Zones.

The county council has already secured £17.1m in Government funding to roll-out super-fast broadband and proposals are on the table to simplify the planning process.

New police treasurer chosen

CUMBRIA Police Authority has appointed Ruth Hunter as its new treasurer.

Ruth, who lives locally but currently works for Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, will take up the post in November when Douglas Thomas, the authority’s treasurer since 2003, steps down.

Ruth said: “I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work with the authority’s members and the chief constable to address the challenges ahead.”

Nursery plan

A NEW nursery could be built in Bigrigg.

Land at Southam Farm – formerly a window showroom and workshop – has been earmarked for the new Bigrigg Nursery and Soft Play.

Plans were submitted to Copeland Borough Council this week.
