Border Cars’ design competition grows

BORDER Cars was so overwhelmed at the response to its children’s design competition last year, it is asking other businesses to get involved too to help make it even bigger and better.
Last year’s competition was open to all students at schools in West Cumbria in years three to 11. Their task was to design cars that helped to promote understanding of the term “low carbon energy” and drew about 2,500 entries.
The winning designs were put on to full-size cars. They were unveiled at the awards evening and have been driven around Cumbria for 12 months.
“The competition was a huge success, attracting large amount of media interest locally and nationally,” said Fraser Brown, Border Cars’ general manager. “The awards evening took place at Border Cars’ showroom at Lillyhall and more than 600 people attended the evening, which was hosted by CFM’s Robbie Dee and was a great success.
“The quality of entries was fantastic.”
Last year the winning school got £1,000 of IT equipment and the winning student won a laptop and a cash prize, with further prizes for each age group.
“We will be doubling the size of the event this year, with finals in Carlisle and at Lillyhall,” said Mr Brown. “In order to make this event even more of a success, this year we are inviting sponsors to come on board and we estimate the reach of this competition to be around 200,000 people across Cumbria.
“We are also looking for judges for the competition and we would be keen to hear from anyone in the low-carbon energy sector who would be willing to judge the competition.”
Judging will take place for a morning in the week beginning October 22, with the awards evenings at Lillyhall on November 15 and at Carlisle a week later.
If you would like to be involved in the competition this year, contact Michelle Khan Schools Co-ordinator on 01228 882242 or E mail: youngcreativestudent@border-cars.co.uk before August 24.
