Copeland MP Trudy Harrison met with a delegation of the South Korean government recently to discuss the nuclear industry.

Mrs Harrison was invited by the South Korea ambassador and was accompanied by Ivan Baldwin, chairman of Britain's Energy Coast Business Cluster at the meeting, held at the ambassador's residence in London.

Mrs Harrison and Mr Baldwin were able to discuss concerns, interests and priorities with the delegation in light of Korean utility firm Kepco emerging as the preferred bidder to acquire NuGen, the firm behind plans for nuclear new-build Moorside in West Cumbria.

Kepco hopes to sign the contract for NuGen soon.

Mr Baldwin said: "The emphasis was on her role as a representative of Cumbrian businesses, especially the energy supply chain.

"This was a tremendous opportunity to also help them to see the vast nuclear energy and construction expertise and excellent in our area.

"What surprised me, but reinforced the value of the meeting, was the delegation’s interest in our decommissioning experience and skills.

"With nuclear accounting for 30 per cent of the electricity supply in South Korea, they wanted to find out more about how the Sellafield site learning and knowledge could be applied to their situations and projects."
