THE historic Irton Hall has been sold in a £1.5 million deal.
It is hoped that the move will create jobs and revive its fortunes as a leading UK holiday destination.
It could also lead to the venue becoming a film location.
The hall, between Santon Bridge and Holmrook, is one of the North West’s most treasured stately homes. According to legend, Henry VI stayed there.
New owner Steve Cottrell, the managing partner at Sale-based accountants Cottrell & Co, plans to restore the hall and create a number of holiday home cottages in keeping with the site. He acquired Irton Hall from Corp Limited after staying there for a family holiday and falling in love with the place.
He said: “I intend to ensure that Irton Hall is a great success. I’ve had plenty of support from the local community who are keen to see the place thriving again.
“The previous owner had not realised the full potential of the cottages as an alternative to the mass tourism of the Lakes.
“I always knew this setting was ideal for a quiet family holiday.
“I’ve had invaluable support from my professional advisers who have all worked quickly to get the deal completed within seven days.”
Chris Baguley, managing director of Manchester-based Bridging Finance Limited, which funded £1.1 million of the £1.5 million deal, said: “Irton Hall is a prestigious site and one that we had no trouble backing once we saw Steve’s plans for the place.”
