EGREMONT pupils have been deemed “excellent’’ by the Minister of State for Schools.

Bookwell School was just one of 159 schools across the country to receive 100 per cent in the recent Key Stage 2 results. It was also in the top eight, out of 307 schools, across Cumbria.

In a letter to Christopher Ashcroft, head of Bookwell, David Laws said: “It gives me great pleasure to congratulate you on the excellent performance of your pupils.

“Mastery of these subjects is critical to success at secondary school and beyond, so these pupils now have given themselves a really good start for the next stage of their education.

“I would like to congratulate your staff, governors and pupils for their hard work and success and to thank you for your leadership in continuing the drive towards the highest standards of educational achievement.’’

Mr Ashcroft said: “We were delighted with our Key Stage 2 results and were pleased to receive the letter from the Minister of State for Schools acknowledging the children’s fantastic achievement.”

He said all the pupils achieved the target level of 4B in reading and maths, and level 4 in writing.

“They also all made at least the expected progress with 53 per cent exceeding the expected progress in reading, 47 per cent exceeding in writing and 53 per cent in maths,” he added.

“The results are not only due to the children’s hard work but also as a result of the dedication and commitment of staff and the support of parents and governors.”
