Beacon treasures are world leaders

THE Beacon is planning a celebration of its achievement in having two of its museum items included in the BBC’s History of the World project.
On Saturday, February 20 (10am to 4pm) there will be a special event in which The Beacon team are inviting members of the public to take a trip back in time by showcasing objects from the museum collection, including some objects not normally on public display.
Learning officer Alan Gillon, dressed in period costume, will be showing Copeland’s history timeline and offering the chance to see and discuss objects in The Beacon collection dating from early Britain to the present day.
“If Objects Could Talk” is the title of the event to which people can bring along their own interesting objects and tell the stories behind them. These can be uploaded onto the BBCs History of the World website. And if you want to dress up in costumes of the past, that’s fine too (there will be prizes for the best adult and child).
The event is free.
The Beilby Goblet and Matthias Read’s painting A Birds Eye View of Whitehaven, the two objects selected for the BBCs A History of the World website, are both on public display in The Beacon’s museum galleries where normal admission applies.
