Assault probe but otherwise a quiet Christmas

COPELAND enjoyed a comparatively trouble-free Christmas.
Police sergeant Mark Nicholson said: “On the whole it’s been quite peaceful and we are very pleased about that.
“There were a handful of arrests for over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, largely for being drunk and disorderly and one domestic assault.”
On Boxing Day police were still investigating an assault which took place on Christmas Eve afternoon on Egremont Road, Hensingham, where one man is said to have punched and butted another. Anyone with information can call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Thirteen people were arrested for alcohol-related offences in Whitehaven on ‘Mad’ Friday – and every cell in the police station was filled at one point. However, Friday night – traditionally one of the busiest nights of the year – passed without major incident, say police. Six people were also given banning notices requiring them to leave Whitehaven town centre.
Sgt Laura Robinson, of Copeland Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Even though there were a relatively high number of arrests, this was due in part to the robust action of Copeland Police in intervening early in incidents of disorder to remove those responsible.
“Copeland Police want people to go out and have a good time, but at the same time, understand that should they be too drunk and spoiling for a fight, they risk being banned from town or arrested.”
