Art fair creates a real buzz

WHITEHAVEN School pupils have raised £500 by holding an art fair to showcase and sell their work.
A selection of work by GCSE and A-level pupils went on display for one evening, where staff, governors and artists had the chance to buy the hundreds of pieces on offer. All of the proceeds were given to the students.
Naomi Chicken, joint head of art, said: “We showcased our top 15 GCSE pieces in the foyer, where the work was professionally framed. It created a real buzz because all of the work was for sale. It’s had a knock-on effect for pupils lower down the school because the work has been sold.”
Previously, open evenings were held at the school where students showcased work. However, this is the first year it has gone on sale.
Mrs Chicken: “We hope to make this a tradition as it something the pupils can work towards.”
During the evening, presentations were made to pupils. Post-16 students, Jade Graham and Laura Palmer, won awards for A-level art, with Laura Biggins of Year 11, winning the GCSE award. Other winners were: Ellie O’Neill, Kate Pearson, Freya Blackburn, Sarah Reid-Thompson and Eilidh Reid.
