Another country show cancelled

ANOTHER major country show has been cancelled due to poor weather.

The Millom and Broughton Agricultural Show was due to be held on Saturday at West Park in Broughton.

The decision was made at a meeting last night, making it the second year in a row the show has been called off.

Last year organisers were forced to cancel following the foot-and-mouth outbreak in Surrey.

Earlier this month the Hawkshead Agricultural Show was cancelled, again for the second time in two years.

South Cumbria’s agricultural shows are major events for the area’s farming community with thousands often turning up to enjoy a day out.

Activities at the Millom and Broughton Show would have included fell racing, horse jumping, Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling and various stalls and marquees.

Show secretary Rachel Jopson said it was clear from the forecast that the condition of the show ground would not improve in time for the weekend.

She said: “The decision was made last night at a meeting of the committee. It is because the ground and the car park field are too wet. You could tell from being on the field that it was too wet for the trade stalls.

“We are fairly disappointed as there is all the hard work that has gone into organising it.

“Unfortunately we’ll have to stand the financial cost of things we’ve already booked like the marquees.

“Hopefully we will get some better weather and get the show on next year.”
