An extra special birthday for Katelyn

A BRAVE little girl has celebrated her ninth birthday – a milestone her family feared she would never reach.
Katelyn McAleavy enjoyed a fun-filled family party at her Whitehaven home on Tuesday, only 10 weeks after she underwent a life-saving heart transplant.
“It’s been amazing,” said Amy Lamb, Katelyn’s mum. “There were times when we never thought we’d see this day, so we are celebrating it in style.”
Guests enjoyed food, party games, balloons and even fireworks at the family’s Uldale Road home, and Katelyn was inundated with gifts from well-wishers, including a computer and desk to help with her home-schooling, clothes, money and, of course, memorabilia of her favourite band, One Direction.
Amy said: “It’s the first time Katelyn has been allowed to be in contact with more than one person at a time, as we’ve had to be careful with infections after the operation. So we’ve been pushing the boat out.”
Katelyn was born with hyperplastic left heart syndrome, which meant that only half her heart worked properly. Since birth, she has had four major operations, including having a pacemaker fitted. Last November, her heart failed again and the only option left was for her to have a complete transplant.
After a 10-month wait on several emergency transplant lists, the family was contacted in August to say a suitable donor had become available and the operation took place at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary. Katelyn now visits the RVI each Monday for follow-up treatment.
Amy said: “Her actual birthday was Monday, and because she had to attend the clinic we had a little celebration on the ward with the other transplant kids, which was really nice.
“But we decided to have her big party at home on Tuesday so all the family could be there.”
Katelyn’s weekly visits to the RVI will continue for a year, then reduce to half-yearly. It is hoped that she’ll be well enough to return to St Begh’s School in two weeks’ time – on half-days initially – before returning full-time after Christmas.
