HISTORIC railway stations were uncovered as children spruced up the Coast to Coast cycle track in Cleator Moor and Moor Row.

Dozens of youngsters donned overalls as they painted railings, bollards and benches along the popular tourist route over several sessions.

The mini-volunteers have been learning about the old railway system which used to run along the track as they have been carrying out the much-needed work.

The initiative, which has been run by Whitehaven Harbour Youth Project and Sustrans, features four sessions over the summer months.

Susttrans cycled out to meet the volunteers and help them with their work. Youngsters also enjoyed ice creams at the gloriously sunny event last week.

Christina Barry, from Whitehaven Harbour Youth Project, said: “It’s something new for them to do and they are learning about the history of the area too - because they didn’t realise that all these small towns were linked up by rail and had their own stations.

“It’s also important because it get them out and about and they all had a great time.

“They don’t even realise they are doing any voluntary work. A lot of children would think of volunteering as something which is boring, but this proves it can be fun.”
