Two women whose lives have been touched by cancer have shaved their heads to raise cash for charity.

Stace McAllister, 30, of Mirehouse, and Dorothy Telford, 67, of Lowca, took part in Macmillan Cancer Support's Brave the Shave and have currently raised £1,200.

They had their hair shaved on Saturday live on Facebook which was seen by over 8,000 people.

Stace signed up for the challenge after her husband Ian, was told in December he was in remission after battling his second bout of Lymphona in 20 years.

"It was the best Christmas present,'' she said. "Macmillan nurses were so lovely with us, talking and give us information when Ian was ill. They helped us through the dark days.

Dorothy, 67, lost her 26-year-old son, Christopher, to a brain tumour, within 11 months in 2002. He had worked as an instrument mechanic at Sellafield, played football for Seaton and enjoyed fishing on the River Derwent.

She said: "He was a lovely lad with a brilliant future ahead of him.''

Dorothy, who herself has herself twice battled breast cancer, became close friends with Stace after meeting at Slimming World classes and sharing their stories.

The women's heads were shaved by Angie Frazer, owner of Whitehaven's Vanity hairdressers.
