A WHITEHAVEN man who stamped on his partner's hip and yanked her hair has received a suspended jail sentence.

Ian Terrance McIntyre, 43, of Lakeland Avenue, admitted assaulting Theresa Tubman and was given a 16-week jail sentence suspended for 12 months.

West Cumbrian magistrates also ordered him to pay Ms Tubman £250 compensation and to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

The court heard how the defendant and Ms Tubman, who had been together 10 years, had been at home when a row had escalated.

Lee Dacre, prosecuting, said McIntyre had then grabbed her hair, and she fell forward down some stairs landing on a metal radiator. McIntyre then, with his bare foot, stamped on her hip.

He then grabbed her and pushed her in the back and told her: "If you want a fight, I'll give you a fight.''

Claire Kirkpatrick, for McIntyre, said her client's actions had been a "wake-up call for him'' and he was being treated for anger management.

He had, Mrs Kirkpatrick said, "been shocked at his behaviour''.

Magistrates said the offence was a "sustained and nasty assault'' with the defendant using his foot as a weapon.

McIntyre was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115 with £85 costs.
