A kind-hearted couple who open their home to children in crisis have won a second community award.

Roy and Marian Muir, from Whitehaven, help out homeless young people by giving them a bed for the night.

They received an Outstanding Volunteer award from Cumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall at his inaugural Community Awards.

And that was followed up with the Overall Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community 2017.

The pair work with Nightstop, a service which provides free, temporary accommodation for homeless youngsters in Cumbria.

Mr and Mrs Muir said: "We both really enjoy hosting for Nightstop and have met some incredible young people.

"We find it so rewarding as it gives the young people a second chance to enjoy life and better themselves in their future endeavours."

Since the charity was set up in March 2015, it has provided 208 'bed nights' across the county, 64 of these have been with Mr and Mrs Muir.

They provide a warm welcome and send each visitor away with a packed lunch in the morning. The couple also spend time volunteering in the area, including at Egremont homeless hostel Calderwood House.

Mr McCall said: "When I launched my Community Awards earlier this year I wanted to be able to formally recognise the outstanding work carried out by people within Cumbria who help to keep their communities safe, in either a voluntary or professional capacity.

"People who go that extra mile to deliver services to the public, preventing crime, supporting vulnerable people and victims or delivering an outstanding service."

He added: "I wanted to be able to make an award for an overall winner, taken from all of the winners from across the county, who I felt made the most outstanding contribution.

"It was a difficult decision, as there were so many worthy winners. However, I was in awe of Roy and Marian Muir, who also won the category of Outstanding Volunteers for the work they do for the project Nightstop, through providing emergency overnight accommodation for youngsters in crisis."
