A parade of colourful floats, music and dancing is coming to Whitehaven on Saturday.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to the town for the annual carnival.

The popular event, organised by Whitehaven and District Lions Club, will feature bands, dance troupes and a selection of flouts.

David Ashworth, publicity officer for the Lions, said: "We have got a good set of parade entries - we just need a sunny day!

"The carnival will go ahead come rain or shine!"

The parade will start at New Road at 1.30pm. It will follow a route around the town centre which ends at Castle Park at around 3pm.

Entertainment is due to take place at the park from around 11am until around 6pm.

There will be a variety of street entertainment, Taylor's Fun Fair and stalls at the park. The afternoon will also feature dance performances and the crowning of the carnival queen.

Mr Ashworth said: "I would encourage people to come down and support the carnival because it is vital that we get some funds. It's our major fundraiser of the year. We aim to get as much money as we can to give to local people. All the money goes back, in one way or another, to help local people."

The popular carnival has been running for more than 40 years, with the Lions organising it for around 20 years.

The Lions would like to thank Copeland Council for the use of the park. They would also like to thank the Cumberland Building Society and Dobies Financial Trust for their financial support.
