A West Cumbrian woman had the shock of her life when she gave birth to a baby she did not know she was carrying.

Rebecca Davis, 23, of Ling Beck Park, Seaton went to her GP with stomach pains.

She was sent to accident and emergency at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven where Grace Edith Rose was born just over an hour and a half later.

Rebecca, who is an admin assistant at Beckstone Primary School in Harrington, said: "I had no idea I was pregnant.

"I feel no different now to what I did a month ago. I did everything normally and I just had no symptoms I was pregnant at all."

Grace was born on December 8.

Rebecca said: "It was a lovely Christmas present. My husband Clive and I got married in August last year and now our little family is complete.

"It was a beautiful little gift.

"We still have to pinch ourselves but it's amazing how much love you have instantly for her, she's magic."

Rebecca was at work when she started feeling pain in her stomach.

She decided to go to the GP with her parents as the pain was persisting and after being examined the doctor asked her to take a pregnancy test.

Rebecca said: "It was positive and then the doctor said I had to go to A&E but I didn't realise I was in labour. I thought I was having a miscarriage because I was bleeding so heavily.
"When we got to the West Cumberland Hospital the staff took me in a room to examine me and as soon as they pulled my pyjama bottoms down someone screamed 'she's delivering'.

"Suddenly there were about six people around me and the A&E staff delivered Grace.

"It's amazing to think how skilled these people are.
"If I had to go to Carlisle I wouldn't have made it. It all went so fast, I only pushed three times.
"Grace also had her cord round her neck so it was a good job I could get to Whitehaven so quickly.
"My husband arrived just after I gave birth and he said: 'Where did that come from?'. Then he broke into tears.

"My mum went to Asda to buy baby clothes and the next day my parents and Clive went to Listers to get a car seat so we could get Grace home.

"I had to ring work and say I had had a baby and had to go on maternity leave but they have been so amazing."

Clive, 48, who is a gas engineer, was also able to take paternity leave.

Rebecca added: "When we told friends and family everyone was just in shock but they've been really good to us, sending presents and cards.

"It's been a big year for us, we've renovated our house and I've lost my grandad earlier this year, but it's true that everything happens for a reason."
