West Cumbrian students have raised hundreds of pounds for charities.

A group of nine Lakes College nurse cadets raised £178.24 for Dementia UK and Alzheimer’s Society with a cake sale and coffee morning.

They decided to raise money for the charities after caring for patients with dementia, as well as having personal experiences of family members with the disease.

The coffee morning took place during Dementia UK’s Time for a Cuppa campaign earlier this month.

Nikki Banister, a second year nurse cadet who helped organise the event, said: “The coffee morning went really well and it was good to raise money for dementia, which is a disease which is not always remembered."

Eight students from the Just the Job project also raised £290.11 for Comic Relief with activities including a cake sale, a raffle and a Pie the Principal event.

Just the Job gives vulnerable young people access to supported work placements and the opportunity to gain a level one diploma in work skills.

They also got a number of other departments involved in the fundraiser, with beauty students painting nails in Comic Relief colours and the catering department making soup to sell.

Workington's Morrisons supermarket provided a food hamper for the raffle's main prize.

Kayleigh Toman, 19, of Maryport, said: "We did really well getting everyone else involved.

"We couldn’t have done it without the help and support of our tutor."

Andrew Moncrief, 20, of Cleator Moor, added: "I enjoyed the activity so much and we raised money for a really good cause."
