Active animals took part in a fun run to help an Egremont primary school raise £1,800 for charity.

Bookwell Primary School pupils completed the charity run, dressed as animals, to support Ani-Mel Haven animal rescue charity.

Year six pupil Mark Kennedy, who is also on the school council, came up with the fundraising idea after visiting the sanctuary.

Headteacher Russell Hardy said: "The school council decided to support a local charity rather than a national charity this year.

"It came up with a plan for the fun run and decided to theme it all around animals. The children travelled in various different ways, from as fast as a cheetah to as slow as a sloth!

"It was a really enjoyable day and hopefully we will have raised lots of money for our chosen charity."

And Mark said: "I found an article in the paper about Ani-Mel and thought this would be a really good local charity to support.

"The sponsor day was really fun and a good way to get everyone active and at the same time supporting a worthwhile charity.

"I have been to Ani-Mel and seen the animals so I know how important the money raised will be to help them continue their wonderful work."

The current fundraising total stands at £1,800 but sponsorship money is still coming in.

Mel James, who runs the animal rescue centre, visited the school to give a talk on her charity and its plans.

She gave an insight into how she helps a variety of animals, ranging from hedgehogs to horses and talked about running sessions for neglected, abused or underprivileged children so that they can be matched with an animal to provide therapy.
