A £1 million lottery win has been scooped in West Cumbria.

The winning ticket is reported to have been bought at P&D Newsagents, in Corporation Road, Workington.

It is understood the lucky customer picked up the prize in a UK Millionaire Maker draw. One customer who was in the shop when the win was revealed said the man had no idea he had won anything when he asked the assistant to check the ticket.

Instead of issuing a receipt as usual, the machine gave the shop assistant a number to call, the customer said. During the 10-minute call, people in the queue waited excitedly to find out how much the lucky winner had scooped, he added.

He said: “He told us afterwards they asked him if he was sitting down and he said ‘no, but I’m holding onto the counter’.

They said he’d won £1 million. He visibly shook.

“Everyone was shaking his hand and delighted for him.”

David Rae, a partner in the business, said: “It’s nice. We have had wins in the past.”

He added that the employee who sold the ticket has now been nicknamed Dina “Millionaire Maker” Watson by customers, and ticket sales at the shop have increased since the news.

A spokesman for Camelot said the company, which runs the National Lottery and EuroMillions, was unable to confirm or deny the win.

The firm will only release information about where a winning ticket was sold if the winner consents to information being made public.
