Safety in the workplace has resulted in £1,000 for West Cumbrian charity Team Evie.

Shepley Engineering and client Sellafield Ltd have donated £500 each to the charity to mark three months of work without accident or injury.

Staff member Craig Richardson said Shepley, one of the largest contractors for Sellafield, donates regular amounts to charities around West Cumbria.

The charity was chosen by Joanne Huddart, who raises funds in memory of her husband Milton.

Team Evie was set up by Greg and Jill Johnston of Little Broughton, near Cockermouth, in memory of their daughter. Evie was born with multiple health problems but fought valiantly for six months before she died in September 2015.

The couple, determined their daughter’s life would count for something, have worked tirelessly for the charity they established.

Both have full-time teaching jobs although Jill is now on maternity leave with their second daughter Imani, who is six-months-old.

The next major event for Team Evie is a moonlight walk at Whinlatter Forest on March 25 – six days before what would have been Evie’s second birthday.

“Last year we did the walk with friends and family. This year we are opening it to anyone who wants to come along. As numbers are limited, though, they do have to let us know,” Mr Johnston said.

He said opening it up is a natural extension from the bereavement service they have opened in Cockermouth to support other parents who have lost children.

“We are inviting people along who want to remember their own children. If they can’t be there but send us a name we will include it,” he said.

The group will walk a trail lit by green glow stick. They will come to a stop to look down on candle lit bags, each bearing the name of a remembered child.

The group will then let off neon-coloured balloons – one for each child.

The Siskin Café at the Whinlatter visitor centre will remain open for the evening for those wanting refreshments.

This is one of several plans in the pipeline for the Johnstons and Team Evie.

Mr Johnston said the charity has become a huge part of their lives “and takes more hours than we ever imagined “but we love doing it.”
