A FORMER West Cumberland Hospital nurse who failed to resuscitate a patient, then didn't record his death for three days, has been struck off.

Henry Moore did not administer CPR as the patient fought for his final breaths at the Whitehaven Hospital.

Psychiatric staff nurse Moore then did not record he had died in a 'timely manner', a Nursing and Midwifery Council panel had found.

Moore should have known that CPR should be initiated and should have known to call for a crash team.

In February last year Moore was given an 18 months conditions of practice order after an NMC panel ruled his actions amounted to misconduct and found his fitness to practice was impaired.

A review panel heard Moore has not worked as a nurse since the incident in September 2012, nor had he undertaken the necessary training in CPR and record keeping.

Panel chair Robert Barnwell said: "We noted Mr Moore's own admission to the substantive hearing panel that he needed further training and had not worked since the incident.

"We took account of the representations by the RCN which state that Mr Moore has not been working since the order was first imposed on 5 February 2015 due to poor health.

"As Mr Moore has not been working, we are of the view that there has been no remediation in this case and therefore the risk of repetition identified by the original panel remains extant today.''

A letter from the Royal College of Nursing, dated January 26 2016, said that "due to ongoing health concerns Mr Moore has not been able to return to nursing practice and, consequently, has not been able to comply with the conditions of practice order''.

The letter continued that "it is extremely unlikely…that Mr Moore will ever be well enough to return to nursing practice…the only option available to Mr Moore is to invite the panel to strike his name off the nursing register''.

Mr Barnwell concluded: "We bore in mind that Mr Moore himself has requested a striking off order be imposed today.

"Mr Moore has not worked since the incident in September 2012 and has therefore not practised as a nurse for approximately four years. He has taken the decision to retire and has not renewed his registration.

"In the circumstances, we considered that the only appropriate sanction in this case was a striking off order.''

Moore's name was struck from the NMC register with immediate effect.

He has 28 days to appeal against the decision.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said: "We conducted a confidential investigation into Henry Moore’s conduct which was handed to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

"We accept the findings of the NMC and continue to strive to provide the best possible patient care. Mr Moore no longer works for the Trust.''
